About Debbie Strayer
Encouragement.
Learning. Life. These three words describe the unique view of education
taken by Family Educational Resources, Inc. and debbiestrayer.com. Born
out of our 16 year journey as homeschoolers and 30 years as educators,
the materials and support offered here represent the Strayer family’s
philosophy and experience.
How did we arrive at this unique vantage point? After receiving several
degrees each in English and education, Greg and Debbie both spent several
years in the classroom. From elementary school to the college classroom,
they spent time understanding the needs of their students and finding
creative ways to meet them. In 1988 the Strayer family embarked on a different
path, answering the call they felt to homeschool.
Son Nate and daughter Ashley left tradition behind and learned at home.
The years of elementary, middle and high school gave us a chance to know
our children deeply and to enjoy and appreciate their gifts and talents.
From baseball fields to swimming pools, the Strayer family lived and learned,
discovering the delights of great stories, great wonders and great faith
along the way. Graduating in 2002 and 2004, both received scholarships
for college and the confidence for life produced by their customized education.
Now consultants to our business and successful in their own right, they
continue to share their energy, creativity and insight with us.
I990 saw the beginning of our years as creators of curriculum and resources
for homeschoolers. As two of the co-authors of the internationally known
and acclaimed series, Learning Language Arts through Literature, Greg
and Debbie shared their knowledge and expertise as educators and homeschooling
parents. Another avenue for the Strayers to encourage homeschoolers came
about with the 1992 debut of Homeschooling Today Magazine. Co-founders
Greg and Debbie Strayer helped start this magazine with the goal of providing
practical help for Christian homeschoolers. Though their involvement ended
in 1998, the vision that founded the magazine is still being realized
today.
Our connection to homeschoolers remains strong as Debbie provides tutoring,
evaluations and consultations for homeschoolers and their parents. Last,
but certainly not least, one of the great delights for Debbie is the encouragement
and equipping that takes place for homeschooling parents through speaking
engagements. Her experience ranges from conferences in every part of the
nation, to homeschool moms retreats and graduations. Debbie has enjoyed
sharing her honest yet humorous views on topics of concern to homeschoolers
for the last 15 years.
The Strayer family has been blessed by the educational journey of the
last 30 years. It is our hope that the encouragement and resources offered
by this business and website will help each family’s educational
experience to be the best it can be. For us, that’s what it’s
all about – encouragement, learning and life.
