The Natural Approach to Teaching Thinking Skills
by Debbie Strayer

“What do you think you should do? Did you think about that before you did it? What were you thinking?” These are all common phrases that come out of the mouths of parents on a daily basis. As a homeschooling parent, my goal was for my children to think, and think deeply about many issues. Was it a good idea to throw the ball into the pond? Should you come when you are called? What did we learn about tigers and where they live? Did the character in the story do the right thing? Full Article

Dealing With my “Momtality”
by Debbie Strayer

You would think there would be a guide out there to help moms gracefully and gradually transition from the hectic, yet delightful life of a home schooling mom to the next phase of life – being the mother of young adults. With my husband’s gracious blessing, I was able to take the time to fly to California, help my 20 year-old synchronized swimming daughter pack up her belongings and start the move back home. We used every nook and cranny in her cute little car and struck out across county, ultimately heading for home in Florida. It was an epic mother-daughter trip to visit family, sightsee, work and visit her fiancé and his family; however, I am getting ahead of myself. First, let me tell you about the beautiful fall we experienced. Full Article

Too Much Grammar?
by Ruth Beechick

For many of their years children learn to use the language. They speak it mostly correctly. Later they write it, again mostly correctly, except that now they must learn the writing mechanics of punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Then finally in the teen years they could learn some systematic grammar that describes and analyzes the language they have been using all those years. Here we look at these three phases of learning language. Full Article
